Helena Elias
Helena Elias is assistant professor at the sculpture department of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, with the coordination of the curricular units of ceramics and plastics Labs. She is currently on the direction board of VICARTE research centre and in charge of the VICARTE thread Art, Science and Materiality: Experiments in Art Practice-based Research, supervising 5 Artistic research PhD FCT grant holders. As an Erasmus native generation, she experienced diverse knowledge practices within the European Arts Higher Education System. She was the principal researcher of ARcTic South, a project funded by EEA Grants Norway, regarding the exchange of Artistic Research experiences between FBAUL and KHIO (Oslo Academy of Fine Arts). She was also a guest artist of Memory Project, led by Merete Rostad at KHIO. She was the PI of Emerging Matters (2023-25), an FCT funded project intended to map the ecosystem of academic artistic research in Portugal and propose an artistic research academic collection with selected artworks from the Portuguese repositories of arts PhD thesis. She is now regional coordinator of CAPHE- Community, Art, Participation in Hybrid Environments, a Marie Curie – SE project, concluding in 2026. As an artist, professor and researcher, she has been articulating teaching, research training and development with art practice, along with organization of events, exhibitions, publications of papers and workshops, in conferences proceedings, journals and book chapters.
